Conveniently located for easy access to Northumberland's beautiful coastline, the magnificent Lake District, historic County Durham, Yorkshire's famous Dales and Moors and even sunny Scotland, Ramsey's Campervans is a new off-shoot of Ramsey's Garage, a family-run business established for 25 years. Our aim is to provide you with everything you'll need to enjoy a very special adventure, whether that's in this gorgeous part of Great Britain or even further afield!

Our VW camper vans have been professionally converted to an extremely high standard, giving you the freedom to explore our beautiful areas at your own pace. Sleeping 4, our luxury conversions are kitted out with everything you will need to make your break one to remember.

How it works


Firstly we just need to check that you are able to drive our campervans. The driver requirements are that you are at least 25 years old and less than 75 years old, have held a full driving license for at least two years that have no more than two minor endorsements and that you have not had more than one recent claim that was your fault. If you fall outside these requirements we may still be able to accommodate you, please get in touch if you do. This is a requirement of the insurance policy. If this is all ok then the next stage is to check availability.


Check availability on the Availability Calendar below. The available dates are in green and the unavailable dates are in salmon. Changeover days are usually on Mondays or Fridays but we can be flexible on dates, especially outside of High season. If the dates you require are available, select MAKE A BOOKING below to proceed.

Make a booking

If you wish to make a booking it couldn't be easier; after checking availability, just call us or email us with your required dates. We will email you a booking form/confirmation, where you can also choose any extras you would like to add to your booking. Please note:

To confirm your booking a deposit of £150.00 is required. You will receive a booking confirmation email from us and then for insurance purposes we need you to email us copies of the following for each driver:

  • Card licence - If you have an old style paper licence then we require a copy of your passport photo ID
  • 2 proofs of address - these must be a utility bill (gas, electric, water, internet/landline), or council tax bill, dated within 3 months of your hire date which must match the address on your driving licence. If you are unable to provide 2 utility bills, we can accept 1 utility bill along with 2 bank statements. We understand paperless billing is becoming more common, so we can also accept a screenshot of your bills
  • 7 days before your hire date we are required to carry out an endorsement check on the licence of any named driver(s). We can do this with your licence number, date of birth and national insurance (NI) number. Alternatively, if you are not comfortable advising us of your NI number, you can go to the DVLA web site and generate a code which we then use with your driving licence number. The DVLA website has details of your options for this at

Security Deposit

A security deposit of £500 will be due before your hire date and we will send you an email to remind you to pay this. This payment can be transferred to our account or be held as a pre-authorisation against a credit card and will be cancelled/refunded within 5 days once the campervan is returned safe and sound.


We are based in Newton Aycliffe and look forward to meeting you and introducing you to your Campervan. Pick up times are between 14:30 and 17:30 and drop off times are between 8:30 and 10:30 Mondays or Fridays, except by prior arrangement. You can leave your car at our premises free of charge whilst you're away, however, vehicles are left at your own risk.

  • The campervan includes for example; Crockery, Cutlery, Cups, Glasses, Plates, Bowls, Kettle, Pans, Cooking utensils - an inventory checklist will be provided
  • A full demonstration of how everything works when you collect the campervan - please allow a little extra time for this
  • A parking space on our premises whilst you're away or free collection from Darlington train station

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I collect the camper from?

We are located Ramsey's Garage on Newton Aycliffe Business Park, just 5 minutes from Junction 59 of the A1M.

When are collection and drop off times?

The camper will be ready to go any time after 2.30pm on the day of collection and we ask it is back with us before 10.30am on the arranged day of return. Hand over days are Mondays and Fridays, unless agreed beforehand.

Can I leave my car with you?

Yes, that will not be a problem, we have an allocated space for your car at our premises. Customer cars are parked at their own risk.

Can we arrive by train?

Of course! We offer a free collection service at an arranged time from Darlington train station on the east coast main line. It is only a short ride back to Ramsey's Campervans, where we can show you all the features the camper is equipped with.

We live locally, can you collect us?

Absolutely. Just tell us where and we'll be there (within reason!).

How old do I have to be to hire a camper van from you?

In general you have to be between 25 and 75 years of age and have held a full driving licence for at least two years to drive our campers.  If you fall outside of these criteria we may still be able to accommodate you, but we will have to get in touch with our insurers and there may be an extra premium to pay.  This is a requirement of the insurance policy. Please get in touch with your individual needs.

Can we have more than one person listed as a driver?

Sure, although because the cost of insurance goes up, you'll have to pay a little extra for the additional drivers - £5.00 each extra driver per day.

I've got a few points on my licence. Is that going to be a problem?

That depends on what the points are for. Give us a call and we can talk about it.  There is a maximum of two 3-point speeding fines/other minor offences in the last five years and have had no more than one minor accident in three years. Anything else will not be covered by our insurance policy and therefore the hire cannot proceed.

Can we take the camper overseas?

Yes you can. We would love to see our camper out on some adventurous trips abroad, although there are some additional insurance costs of £8 per day if you're planning on driving outside the UK.

Do you need a booking deposit?

Yes. There's a non-refundable booking deposit of £150.00 payable before a booking can be confirmed, and the balance of the charges is then due at least 6 weeks before you're due to hire from us.

Do I need to pay a security deposit?

Yes a security deposit for £500 is payable before the collection of the vehicle.  Provided you bring the van back on time, clean, in the same condition as it left and with a full tank of diesel, this will be refunded within 5 days.

How do I go about booking the camper?

Can I book additional days?

Yes, of course. Please get in touch with us to discuss any additional days. We will try to be as accommodating as possible. However, please bear in mind that during mid and high season this may be harder to accommodate.

What documents do I need to bring?

You must bring your full driving licence together with two other forms of ID from the following:

Gas or Electricity bill (less than 3 months old)
Telephone bill (not mobile) (less than 3 months old)
Internet bill (less than 3 months old)
Council Tax bill
Water bill (less than 3 months old)

Due to insurance restrictions, we cannot release the van without these documents!

There are two ways for us to produce documents to check your licence for endosements. For the first, we will need your driving licence number, postcode and National Insurance (NI) number so we can check online.

If you are not comfortable with sharing your NI number you can generate a code online with the DVLA (valid for 21 days) -- see We can then use the code to access your licence details. Since the abolishment of the paper counterpart this is the only way we can check for any endorsements.

If travelling outside the UK we also need to see your passport.

What about insurance?

Comprehensive motor insurance is included in the basic price. If you are unfortunate enough to be in an accident, you'll have to pay the policy excess of £500. View our full insurance details in the terms and conditions.

Is my personal property included in that insurance cover?

Afraid not. If we did that the cost would go through the roof and right now we're nice and affordable! Fortunately, it's a lot cheaper for you to arrange your own travel insurance -- in fact we recommend that you do for peace of mind.

What happens if there is a problem with the camper?

In the unlikely event of a breakdown we have 24 hour roadside assistance. If the van cannot be repaired or replaced we will refund the remainder of your hire period.

How do you feel about dogs?

We love dogs! Just make sure they are well behaved and they don't eat the fixtures and fittings. However, an additional charge of £25 per hire is payable for the extra cleaning that is required.

What about bikes?

We may be able to provide a removable bike rack that fits right to the rear of the van which can carry up to 3 bikes. Let us know in advance if you're bringing bikes and if it's available we'll fit it before you get here. Don't forget to make sure your bikes are covered by your insurance.

So what else should we be bringing with us?

We supply a fridge and gas for the stove with every hire, as well as cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, etc. You'll need your own bedding, of course, along with pillows, towels, that kind of thing.

What works on the leisure battery?

The leisure battery is charged up when you're on the move and will last for about 10-11 hours. It works the USB sockets, fridge, electric tap, ignition on the hob and interior lights. This means the vehicles main battery is never used for these bits and pieces. We recommend that you plug into a campsite's electrical hook-up to keep the leisure battery charged overnight. The electric sockets only work off the mains hook up.
